Hoosier Legislators Stand for Fairness

Yesterday the Indiana House and Senate easily overrode Governor Eric Holcomb’s veto of the Fairness in Girls’ Sports ActHB 1041. The bill states that only a biological female may participate in competitive girls’ K12 school sports. It will become law on July 1. Indiana becomes the 17th state to successfully pass this type of legislation.

HB 1041 is about more than fairness in sports for girls. Few legislators seemed to want to say this, but if a girls’ track, pool, court, or team cannot be gender-specific then there is no logical basis to say that their school locker room or shower is gender-specific.

A poll in early April of 1,012 likely Indiana voters found 65% support for this legislation to protect girls’ sports. If a pollster would ask Hoosiers about this bill regarding anatomical males in girls’ locker rooms or showers, I’d bet that number would jump by 25 points.

HB 1041 passed in the House on January 27th with 66 votes. It passed in the Senate on March 1 with 32 votes.

The House moved quickly without debate, gaining strength even with several members not present who would likely have voted “yes.” The veto was overridden 67-28. The Senate overrode it after a long, often convoluted, debate claiming, on the one hand, the bill was not needed or a distraction, on the other hand, gender-fluid biological males should have the right to participate in girls’ sports. The Senate was unphased. They overrode the veto 32-15.

I want to thank all those who contacted their legislators asking them to move this bill into law!

The ACLU and other left-wing activists say they will file suit to stall or block the law. Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita has pledged to defend the law from all challenges.

Not Wanting to Speak of Gender Confusion

A new national poll from McLaughlin & Associates of likely November voters finds that 78% of Americans do not believe transgenderism is a “healthy human condition.” That same large percentage of Americans agreed that minor children suffering from gender confusion should be “required to wait until they are adults” before undergoing life-altering drugs and surgeries. Moreover, 90% believe that medical professionals performing gender-altering procedures should be required by law to disclose the long-term medical and psychological impact of such procedures.

An overwhelming 93% of those surveyed say it is “possible to distinguish between men and women.” Most of those surveyed (72%) also do not want schools teaching elementary-age children about sexual orientation and gender identity with 38% saying it was “inappropriate” and another 30% saying is “dangerous because it can lead to children being groomed for sexual encounters at an early age.”

However, the pollsters also found that a large portion of those surveyed are afraid to speak about this issue due to fear of retribution. One-third say they keep their views on this to themselves. Only 30% say they are willing to express their views on this in public.

High Gas & Food Prices Are Hurting Us All

For many families reading this weekly email, this coming Memorial Day weekend may mark the start of summer vacations now that school is out for most children and college students.

If this fits your situation, AFA of Indiana would like to wish you a wonderful time making memories with your family.

I’d like to just mention that summers can be a little rough for donation-run non-profits like AFA-IN. With inflation being at a 40-year high and so many families getting crushed by high prices, we are not surprised that our donations are down 10% from this time last year. We have a $15,000 shortfall in YTD income from the previous year. We budget for this and run as lean as an organization as we can to be good stewards of your trust.

Even though summer is near and there are things to look forward to, please don’t forget the work we do. If you are able, despite your own challenges in this economy, we would appreciate any gift you can give to AFA-IN. You can make a tax-deductible donation online here.

In Their Own Words:

“There are three points of doctrine the belief of which forms the foundation of all morality. The first is the existence of God; the second is the immortality of the human soul; and the third is a future state of rewards and punishments. Suppose it possible for a man to disbelieve either of these three articles of faith and that man will have no conscience, he will have no other law than that of the tiger or the shark. The laws of man may bind him in chains or may put him to death, but they never can make him wise, virtuous, or happy.” – President John Quincy Adams
