AFA-IN Legislative Alert
American Family Association of Indiana, Executive Director Micah Clark shares:
I need your help on two important bills before the Indiana Senate.
• House Bill 1122 is a bill designed to update Indiana law and definitions regarding adult business regulations. The primary item of significance expands the protection zone (from 500 to 1000 feet) keeping sexually-oriented businesses away from daycare centers, schools, and places of specific use for kids due to the negative outcomes often associated with sexually oriented businesses. (There is grandfathering language for existing situations. Moreover, if a child-centered facility moves into the buffer zone, and the adult business is already there, this provision does not apply.)
This bill passed the House local government committee unanimously, with no opposition testimony. It received strong bipartisan support with 84 votes in the House. (Several legislators were excused from the vote for various reasons, or the vote would have been even stronger.)
However, the bill has not sailed as smoothly in the Senate. It has been reassigned from the Local Government Committee to the Judiciary Committee. There seems to be some confusion over the bill. Your Senator needs to hear from you on this issue.
Please call your Senator today and ask them to support HB 1122.
• House Bill 1041 – This is the “Fairness in Girls Sports Act.” It simply states that a biological male may not participate in competitive girls’ school sports. The bill was unexpectedly changed in the House to only apply to K-12 schools.
National legal experts have recently informed us that removing collegiate programs causes a potential legal problem in the defense of this legislation.
Please call your Senator in support of HB 1041 and ask them to protect girls’ college-level sports in this bill.
