The American Family Association of Indiana, a leading pro-life and pro-family organization founded in 1993, applauded the long-awaited ruling from the US Supreme Court in the Mississippi abortion case. The historic Dobbs v. Jackson ruling returns the issue of abortion back to the state legislatures to decide.
“Almost thirty years ago the Indiana General Assembly passed a policy statement noting that it is the desire of Indiana to prefer childbirth over abortion. Now is the time, in a special legislative session, to follow through and finally make that statement a reality. Indiana law should now prevent abortion as a means of birth control,” said Micah Clark, Director of the American Family Association of Indiana.
Clark further noted that “A woman’s right to choose occurs before conception. After conception, there is a new life to consider and protect. The legislature should protect innocent life in as many cases as possible, finally making abortion truly rare. Legislators should also consider expanding funding or other help for women who are in a crisis pregnancy situation and for entities that assist in those situations, including counseling, pregnancy resources, and maternal care.”
“I would also encourage Attorney General Todd Rokita to review any pending lawsuits from abortion advocates challenging our laws, and file a motion with the courts to dismiss them in light of this historic ruling. And, I would suggest a review of any previous rulings limiting laws passed by our legislature and move, if appropriate, to reverse those rulings in light of this Supreme Court decision,” said Micah Clark, Director of AFA of Indiana.
In 2020, there were 7,765 abortions performed in Indiana according to the Indiana Department of Health.*
