State police investigating county clerk as ballot room access problems persist

SOUTH BEND — As the St. Joseph County Election Board continues to discuss how to handle access to the room where ballots are kept in the basement of the County-City Building, board members will now have to contend with a criminal investigation into potential election law violations.

Though the exact focus of the investigation is unclear, election board members believe a situation where more than two keys were able to unlock the ballot storage room is the root of the inquiry by Indiana State Police.

On Tuesday, St. Joseph County Commissioners unanimously approved the hiring of local attorney Jim Korpal to represent St. Joseph County Clerk Rita Glenn during the investigation which “concerns policies and procedures used in the 2022 Indiana primary election,” according to a letter from Korpal to commissioners.
