Senate Bill 1 Advances, but Does the Protection of Life?

On Tuesday the Senate Rules Committee passed Senate Bill 1 on a 7-5 vote after two days and many hours of intense testimony. The abortion bill will now face its biggest test tomorrow. The bill will be on the full floor for amendments from abortion advocates as well as pro-life Senators.

There is a real battle going on behind the scenes between Republican Senators who want to hide from this issue and those who truly care about the unborn and want to save babies. Then there is the entire Democrat caucus that can’t seem to think of a single abortion that should be off-limits under any circumstance.

I want to caution you that some of the media narratives (not all) are false flags for the abortion industry. They have reported that this is among the strictest abortion law in the nation. Now they are reporting that the bill got stronger and would ban even more abortions with an amendment tightening rape exception language. (It merely limits an allowance for this up to 12 weeks for those under 16 years of age. A Democrat I respect and like, Sen. Tim Lanane, questioned if this was long enough for a raped woman to know she is pregnant and decide. Really Senator?)

No one liked this bill on either side of this debate during testimony. This is still true after three modest amendments were adopted by the Committee.

You’d have to be at least 60 to recall the Disney movie, Song of the South because it is deemed politically incorrect today. One of the folk stories told in the movie is of “Br’er Rabbit” who gets caught by a fox. The wily rabbit says, “no matter what you do, please don’t throw me in the briar bushes.” Yet, unknown to the fox, thorn bushes are no problem for a slick rabbit. Fox takes Rabbit’s words of fear and throws Rabbit in, only to watch as Br’er Rabbit gets away laughing at his fooling the fox.

That is the case here in my view. The abortion industry and their allies are crying “don’t do this to us, SB 1 will end abortion in Indiana and put us out of business.” In reality, the bill has no teeth that can significantly stop a determined abortionist. George Soros-backed prosecutors, like Ryan Mears in Indianapolis, (where 70% of Indiana’s abortions occur) can just ignore SB 1 and keep on killing the unborn.

Here is an outstanding legal review of SB 1 by the nation’s top legal mind on life issues. Thankfully he lives in Indiana. Unfortunately, Jim Bopp was shut out of the drafting of SB 1. Reading his memo will explain a lot about this legislation, its problems, and the challenges we face to fix this legislation.

The Indiana Senate needs to pass a real pro-life bill this summer. There are more than enough pro-life legislators IF those endorsed by life groups follow through with the campaign promises they have made to voters (mailed to us in postcard after postcard) for years.

The Mighty Thin Blue Line

On Monday the forces of evil were working overtime as hundreds upon hundreds of abortion activists flooded the statehouse overwhelming the far fewer pro-life citizens.

You may think that is a harsh description, but this is such an obvious spiritual battle.

Yet, what a difference a day makes. Several legislators have noted how different yesterday was when hundreds of pro-life Hoosiers wearing blue showed up in force. Monday was filled with profanity, yelling, chanting, vulgar signs, hatred, etc. Tuesday was far more polite with prayers, songs, and courtesy. (I am speaking in generalities, but even the news photos confirm these differences.)

I want to thank all those who came to the statehouse Monday and Tuesday to be seen for life. You did make a difference.

This battle is far from over. This session will last at least two weeks. We just passed step one of at least six essential steps, (perhaps 8 or 9 if we have a conference committee and a bill on the governor’s desk).

Your voice is still needed in this critical battle over life. Please contact your legislators asking them to pass a pro-life bill that truly protects the unborn. Let them know SB 1 is not strong enough. (Pray that SB 1 is strengthened on Thursday with floor amendments. Please pray too, that more pro-life Senators will speak up and stand for life.)

Senator Mike Young will be offering amendments to try to fix Senate Bill 1. You may want to ask your Senator to support Sen. Young’s amendments.

In Their Own Words:

“Abortion and racism are both symptoms of a fundamental human error. The error is thinking that when someone stands in the way of our wants, we can justify getting that person out of our lives. Abortion and racism stem from the same poisonous root, selfishness.” – Alveda King, niece of Dr. Martin Luther King
