A move toward paper-based elections is welcome news to those concerned about election integrity. The use of electronic voting machines is a concern of many across the nation. Indiana First Action is leading the election integrity effort in the Hoosier State.

The Results Are In: U.S. Moves Toward Paper-Based Elections

Security concerns and the inability to provide a paper trail have all but eliminated the once-popular devices which stored votes directly on electronic memory. Ballot marking devices have largely replaced them.

Most voting systems are designed to last 10 to 20 years. In the 2022 elections, 24 states will be using voting machines that are more than 10 years old, according to an analysis from the Brennan Center for Justice. In the coming years, hundreds of jurisdictions around the country will be in the market for new election technology. 

Increasingly, local election authorities are turning to ballot marking devices or recommitting to paper ballots marked by hand. In 2022, 92.2 percent of voters will live in a jurisdiction using one of these voting methods. 

Peoria County, Ill., a mid-sized county in central Illinois, held its primary elections on June 28, marking the halfway point through the 2022 primary season. This was the first election in Peoria with paper ballots in more than 10 years. Prior to this year, they had been using Hart InterCivic eSlate, a type of direct recording electronic (DRE) device. These types of devices record votes to electronic memory.
